There actually haven't seemed to be that many unlucky days in my life. So maybe I was due for one. Regardless, last Monday was it. It started on Sunday afternoon when I went to try out a refurbished snow blower that was given to us since our one that we had been using was also broken. I wanted to make sure I knew how to use it since Russ would be traveling that week. Well, after 4 runs of the driveway, I broke it. Russ tried to fix it, but when he did, the auger didn't move. Boy did I feel bad that I had already rendered it useless in the middle of a big snowstorm. Thankfully, Russ finished the job with a shovel.
Then, in the morning, when I was getting ready to take the kids to school, the van was starting funny. I thought it was due to the temperature, and just that it needed to warm up. I was able to get Trevor off to school before Gwen and I were off to run our errands. We stopped at a local bank, then went across the street to do our grocery shopping. After the groceries were back in the car, the car decided to not start for me. *Sigh* Getting the car looked at was on the list of things to do this week, because it was also in need of an oil change. But of course it had to happen right after a snow storm. So when I called roadside assistance, they were backed up. I started off asking for a jump because they said it would be quicker. But when they quoted two hours and said I had to be with the car when they came, I cancelled the service. I had them tow it, instead. That was another 4 hours but at least I didn't have to be with the car. I had them tow it to the service dealership so it could be serviced for other things as well.
Then we went in the grocery store to see if we could get a cab to take us home. Nope. The cab companies the grocery store suggested were booked and not taking any calls, or disconnected. Then I made the call list through my phone book and found a willing friend to pick us up and drive us home. Since we had another car, I got reorganized and took Gwen back to the car so we could pick up our groceries. Got those, got on with the day, and when the dealership called, I was told that it was the battery that needed changing and that once that was fixed, it was fine. I asked to get the key automatic door openers looked at, and an oil change.
When I went to pick Trevor up from school after chess club, I made the mistake of putting the mail on top of the car and forgot to take it off. It blew all over the road and I didn't recover all of it. So I decided that that was my three things that were going to happen to me that day. Unfortunately, on Tuesday when I went to get the car, they didn't understand about the key and said I would need to leave it there longer, (to which I said no thanks), the car still isn't starting like it should, and two of the tires are low on air, which should have been taken care of with the oil change. *sigh* So that means another discussion with the service station. Hopefully someone will listen to a dissatisfied customer. And hopefully the car continues to actually start until next week. Russ is home until the new year, so we need both cars during some scheduling conflicts.
On to Christmas! I want some more fun times please!

A few changes
I know I'm going to be a little sad when it finally happens in 10 months. Yesterday in the mail, we received a notification for Trevor going into Kindergarten class next year. I was SO excited! We have a Kindergarten "round-up" to put on the calendar in January. We have to get his immunizations up-to-date. We get to attend the school as part of a "tour" that they do to any interested families. I'm pretty sure Trevor doesn't get it at this point, but I'm pretty sure he will in a few months.
Yesterday I went to the salon to get foiled and a haircut. I had decided it was time for a haircut. I'm pretty sure that 6 inches or so came off. So not simply a "trim". Everyone saw it before they went to bed last night, but this morning Trevor says to me, "Mommy, when I just looked at you, I thought you were Bubba." (My mom). That always seems to happen. Whenever my hair gets shorter I look more and more like my mom. What can you do?
We are off to the cabin this weekend. Too bad the weather is going to be so chilly. But it will be a short trip. Have a little fun and then back to reality. Time to continue packing!

Some Toys
As we get ready for Gwen's birthday followed by Trevor's and then Christmas, I figure I should let you know about some of the things the kids are playing with. They might go by the wayside with new stuff coming in. Or at least I hope to weed out or recycle and hide some of the old toys to make way for the new stuff.
Trevor still plays with Cars cars. We have been slowly introducing him to board games and I have a few in mind to get him for his birthday or Christmas. He knows how to play Uno, Chutes and Ladders, Memory, Hi Ho Cherry O, and Sequence for Kids. I have been involved in a free game site that just started offering Monopoly. Trevor noticed that we had games like that, but wasn't interested in playing by the rules (I think the actual age is like 10 and up) but liked the fact that he could make similar sound effects like dice rolling and going to jail on a game board that he liked. The one he wanted to play on was our Mario/Nintendo game board.
Over this summer, I found a fisher price dollhouse at a garage sale for $1. It was in very good shape but did not come with any furniture or dolls. A few weeks later, my mom found some furniture at a store in Chicago. A few weeks ago, Trevor had still been playing with the house using it as Lightning McQueen's house. But on Wednesday, the family of dolls was found. We now have grandparents, parents, a brother and sister, and boy and girl twin babies. So now Trevor can play with Bubba, Papa, Mommy, Daddy, Trevor, Elizabeth, Gwen, and Sam. (Yes, I tried to convince him Sam was not a baby, but he wanted the baby boy to be Sam). And he loves it. Unfortunately, Gwen does too. And even more unfortunate, she isn't at the age where she can play with the big house yet. If we put it on the floor for her, it would easily be broken within a week. So instead, we let her sit on someone's lap and play or she even likes to carry around a select doll and then drop it off to be lost for a few hours. (That's what happened with the mommy doll today).
As far as toys Gwen likes...it's pretty much any of Trevor's toys that he plays with. Add to that, the Word Whammer refrigerator toy that has like 30 letters scattered on the fridge which come off and get picked up 30 times a day....and then she also has a few books that she likes to read. She now gets around by walking everywhere. And jabbering. She's trying to copy things she hears, but she has a good time walking around talking to herself. Or to you if you want to listen to her. I'll have to get a video of her, if I can remember!

Blech
Things were going well. Gwen had been finally sleeping in her crib for naps the past two days. We had a fun playdate at Heather and Hayden's house on Saturday. We went to the MOA at the Nickelodeon park that night. We had a good drive up and back on Sunday for great-grandpa's 80th Birthday party. And it sounds like Trevor really enjoys his new camp. This one is "Story Time Fun" where he does crafts and activities based on a story that they read. The stories are from PBS kids - Curious George, Caillou, Arthur, etc.
And then last night happened. Both kids were up later than normal, so hopefully that had something to do with it and not getting sick. But last night was no fun. Trevor woke up 4 times screaming out. I would try to get him to wake up, but most of the time he would not. When I finally got an answer out of him about what was going on, he answered that it wasn't pain, but something that he was dreaming about. So when Gwen woke up this morning screaming, I felt in a big fog. I did let her cry for a while hoping that she would wake herself up and realize she didn't need to be screaming as she sometimes does. But nope, she was screaming and up for good.
So today, Trevor has has camp and Gwen has pictures. Both of which I just have a BIG wish and hope that they both can do well today. Also, we were invited to a pool party at 3pm today. I don't know if we will be able to make it given what is going on today and the bad night last night. But we will try.

Crazy week
While we were at the lake Monday and Tuesday, it has been a crazy week here at home.
First off, I wanted to pass on my congratulations again, although a little late to Erika and her family. They had a beautiful baby girl on Monday. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE her name. Piper Chloe. Their daughter Caroline picked out her middle name. Hopefully she'll get her night's straight soon!
Here at home, it has been a nice return to the house. Trevor has been tough on Thursday but pretty good yesterday. He did get in trouble early on Friday but when I told him he needed a time out, he brought himself upstairs. WOW. I just hope that his attitude continues until next week for camps. I read him the description of the classes for the coming weeks and he sounded very excited. I think he was also very happy that he wasn't going back to art camp. Poor guy. I hope I didn't scar him for life with that one.
Gwen has been going on a nap strike for most of the week. I have successfully gotten her to stop napping on my shoulder. Although I do have to get her to sleep that way. I think she is finally on her way to popping a tooth, or some kind of milestone because she is not enjoying her bottles. I know Trevor did this too and we had tried to change bottle flow thinking that that was the issue. So this time I'm pretty sure it's just a phase or else her teeth are bothering her.
Hopefully she'll figure the nap thing out soon. It would be nice to get some stuff done around the house!

Miscellaneous stuff
Gwen has an ear infection. Just in one ear. She's on the tail end of her cold so I'm thinking the antibiotics will work again.
Trevor went to the big gym again today. It cracks me up when we come home afterwards and then he tries to jump on his single person trampoline and he says it's broken.
So today I went out to get the mail. Up the street, I hear a police siren and see a police car trying to pull over a black suburban. The driver either was drunk or had a medical condition because he drove up on the curb before crossing the block before our street. He then came up our street, drove up onto our neighbor's curb and knocked over the mailbox. At this point I ran up and locked our door and peered out to see what was going on. All I saw was the police officer walking up to the truck and then the driver sped off. So then there were a total of three cars that zoomed by after him and then eventually an ambulance. WOO HOO...the things that happen in our town!

Busy week
Not a whole lot going on, other than trying to keep everything in order. I hear Trevor has been practicing hard for his preschool program next Thursday. And at the same time he is looking forward to going back to the lake that same weekend. I have a feeling that the next week is really going to drag by though because the weather is going to be dreadful. I have to say, that I wasn't really convinced that global warming was all that bad of a thing if confined to Bloomington, Minnesota. Where is the darn warm weather?
Gwen has been napping in her usual fashion. Not all that great. I wonder if today is a day for nap strikes because she was up shortly after 5 am this morning. I'm going to have to do a coffee drive-thru on our way to the big gym.
She is really trying to get herself crawling or at least scooting in a forward direction. She knows that she can somehow do it, but can't quite put it all together yet. If it were warmer, I would be able to take off her pjs and she could get more traction with just her legs.
Hopefully I'll get some things crossed off the to-do list and maybe a little more sleep. Hope you all have a great weekend!

We did it!
Another accomplishment in my world....we made it to Gwen's 6 month pictures, took a few with Trevor, waited around for the pictures, picked them out, played for a few minutes at the mall, did a drive thru at McD's, and came home. NO meltdowns, NO wild disobedience, NO even real fussiness. I'm so proud of my kids. Gwen is on the mend from being sick and it could have been a horrible experience.
We had to leave before she had taken a nap. So I thought that was going to be the end of it. She was trying to sleep when she decided to poop. Which keeps her awake. And then the diaper change itself makes sure she won't go back to sleep any time soon.
So then we get to the portrait studio. And I recognize the photographer as one we have had before (when Trevor was younger) that I DID NOT like. Great. But I figured if she was still around, she had to get a few good shots. Now get this - I started getting the kids ready for the car at 10am. Our appt was for 11am. The mall is less than 10 minutes from our house. And we got there, and I got Gwen dressed and we were ready at exactly 11:00. It takes me a full hour to get everyone in the car and ready for a 10 minute car ride.
But anyway, score one point for mom for allowing enough time. We took a few pictures, and Trevor turned into a photographer himself. At least he tried to help with Gwen to get her to look at the camera. Now, I didn't note what time we were done actually taking the pictures, but I would guess like 11:20 or so. At that time, there was still just the one person working. She had to help with the previous family in picking out their pictures to order. Then another woman came in to look at frames. So she answered a few of her questions. Then Trevor was getting antsy so she helped him with a movie he could watch to keep him entertained. And as the movie was just getting started, a mom with a 3 year old boy (or so...I'm just guessing) and a 6 week old boy came in to pick up pictures. Only they were in yet. So she calmly expressed her frustration on our photographer. There wasn't anything she could do about the pictures not being in, but she did say that she would fed ex the pictures as soon as they came in. Apparently they just changed management and lost at least one of their photographers. Perhaps for more mis-haps like this one? In the mean time, her 3 year old son started watching the Thomas movie that Trevor was watching. So the new family was ready to go, and of course the boy didn't want to go. So the mom was quietly asking him to get going. You could see that he was another person that loved Thomas. The mom turned to threats....he brought along a Gordon train. So the boy walked with the mom out into the store. Not more than 2 minutes later the boy walked away from his mom back to the TV. His mom found him again, and said something like, "I love you baby, but we need to get going now. I'm going to take away Gordon right now. GET OVER HERE." It really wasn't the worst situation I've seen by far. He wasn't screaming or throwing any sort of fit, he just didn't want to get going. But he finally did. Of course, not more than another 2 minutes later, you see him tearing across the store behind the racks of clothes where his mom is unable to see or come near him with a big stroller. His mom is now screaming at him to stop. And he keeps going. That was the last time I saw or heard of him.
In the mean time, Gwen has taken her bottle and fallen asleep. The lady looking at frames comments to me: "Wow do you make it look easy". Now I have no idea how many kids this woman has, but I was thinking to myself...I just got lucky today. Or maybe it is because Gwen just hit the age that she is pretty easily consoled even if she is cranky. But I do appreciate that I looked like super mom.
So I picked out the pictures I wanted, we walked to the reactrix play area for Trevor for a few minutes. Gwen had woken up as we were going down the elevator. We did a quick drive-thru at McD's, and got home.
Now that Gwen is feeling better, I'm hoping that her span of staying up for a few random hours in the middle of the night. I'm still not sure her ears are tip top because I remember how Trevor did when having ear infections. He would require a few nights of tylenol before his ears finally felt better. But she is having trouble in those first few minutes (or hours later at night) before she can settle down and sleep or stay awake until later.
Anyway...we are off to the cabin this weekend, so I can't really start anything new until we get back. Maybe she'll solve the issue herself soon. Or maybe it is another touchpoint thingy going on. We'll see!

Backwards days
You know...yesterday, I was up for the day at 5:30 (not by choice), but got a TON done...laundry, vacuuming, a little exercising, organization and the such, and really didn't feel tired until the usual 8:00 or so. This morning, I was up for the day at 7:00 and haven't been able to get anything done and feel so yucky. And not sick yucky. And not really tired either. I wonder what it is.
Yesterday, because Trevor is off of school for the next two weeks, I was able to play Cars with him and the help of Gwen. For some reason Trevor was ok with it. Maybe because I don't get a lot of chance to play with him, so he is happy to get any time.
***Cut to the next day. I didn't get a chance to post this when I wrote it on Friday, so I'm continuing my thoughts today. So here goes attempt #2.
I'm trying more and more to try to get Trevor to get used to Gwen playing with us as well. Maybe (I'm thinking a year or maybe more from now) they will be able to play a few things together and Trevor will realize he can play with someone that has more time to play with him and absolutely ADORES him. Already, I can see it. And of course all of Trevor's toys are new to Gwen so she loves them.
But anyway, then I was trying to say that on Thursday, although I did not get enough sleep and was up early for the day, I did pretty well. But Friday, when I was up an hour and a half later, maybe I was just in a worse mood for some reason but the day just did not go well. Maybe it is a blessing that it happens that way because I'm more likely to be able to deal with the rough days with more sleep than on days I don't have a lot of sleep.
Anyway....on another note, I figure I'd also add a few updates to Gwen not involving her sickness. She can sit unassisted for a decent amount of time. I think she is also learning how to scoot with her legs. She knows how to scoot across the floor on her back by pushing her legs, but she really does this unintentionally. When she is on her stomach, I can help her along a little bit, and she seems to know that she can do it to move to a toy that might be out of reach. So while she isn't walking holding onto fingers or hands, she does like to observe from a standing position. And if I put her exersaucer a few inches out of reach, I feel like I can see the wheels in her head moving...trying to figure out how to get herself just a few inches forward.
For the record, Trevor was crawling at 7 1/2 months. I'm not sure how far off Gwen is, but I'm pretty sure it won't be much later than Trevor given what she can already do. I suppose I should start figuring out childproofing stuff soon. I know our furniture was dramatically different when Trevor was crawling around.
