Who knows which is more busy

You know, you go through your head, you look at your calendar, and you think...."well, if I could just get through May....June will slow down", or "If I could just get done with school, then my time will really free up".  Or how about, "Once my baby is in 1st grade...all day school...then I'll REALLY have a lot of free time."  Yeah, right.  It's all a big joke.  I ran into one of Trevor's classmates family at a garage sale, and she was talking about how that idea never ends.  It goes well into "when the kids are out of the house...." to "when I retire....."  You always think you will have more time on your hands.  And it NEVER happens.

So you do your best to enjoy as much of it as you can.  Having two kids in various activities does make it hard to make it to everything, but with the help of the village, you do make the best of it.  I decided to run out to Chicago for a day and a night to see the Rolling Stones in concert.  I think it was the first time I was actually old enough to remember all the sights of downtown.  We didn't see it all, but I really think I got a taste of it all.  Thanks to Russ, we stayed in a ritzy hotel for the evening, and thanks to the weather, we didn't get rained on at all.  It was overcast for most of the day, with rain threatening, and actually during the concert, there was a flash flood warning but we never saw any of it.  We went to the park and ate at the park cafe, we found a speakeasy and had a few martinis.  We enjoyed over 2 hours of great Stone's music and had no problems getting back home the next day.

The kids got some extra time playing around:  Gwen got a playdate in the morning, to stay in the after school program, and then had a playdate at night during Trevor's baseball practice.  She LOVED it.  That girl and her social wants.  It sounded like everything went smoothly too...no fighting or what have you.  When I came back, she had her dance recital practice, and then had another small playdate.  Now, I would think that once school gets out, this time may be a little less hectic, but I'm thinking, probably not.

Trevor, also got to be in the after school program, but he's enjoying playing baseball as much as he can.  Last night, they had their first winning game!  Unfortunately, they had the late game so they weren't done until after 11pm.  On a school night!  I took Gwen home at about 9:30 and she crashed as her head hit the pillow.  I was able to keep track of the scores through an online scoring program that one of the dad's uses.  It was so FUN to watch that winning game.  Trevor pitched two innings and did really well!  It was for two innings that I was able to be at, so I was happy that I didn't miss that.  Hopefully it will give the team a little boost that they need to get some more winning games!

This next week continues to be busy with Kindergarten "graduation", talent show, Gwen's dance recital tomorrow, baseball practices/games, and year end parties.  It was a very fun year, I think, for both kids at school.  I can't wait to see which teachers they get for the next school year!  And maybe the weather will warm up soon???

Things are changing.....

It is so cliche to say that the kids grow up in the blink of an eye.  But really, over the last month, the kids really have grown up and come so far from where even I once was in my life.  Facebook is amazing in that you can keep in touch with people from all points in your life, and I am further amazed at how many different ways people's lives can go and yet still feel connected to everyone in some strange way.

But back to the kids:  Last week, we got an installed Gwen's bedframe for her bedroom.  With that, came the end of a 7 year era where someone was sleeping on a bed that was on the floor.  Gwen was thrilled of course to be getting off the ground, but it also made me realize that she didn't need any of her 3 step stools that we had for her to help get up higher to things in the house.  She can reach all the faucets to wash her hands in the bathroom, brush her teeth and the like.

This week, Gwen and the whole Kindergarten class went on a field trip to the nature center.  It is amazing to see these kids and how much they have all grown in the past school year.  They are almost first graders!  Gwen had her first lunch at school, well, on the field trip anyway.  I will say, I'm concerned about next year and her speed of eating.  She, like me, is a slow eater.  She is also a picky eater.  She is also a social eater.  So put all these things together, and I have no idea how she will get through the day eating probably less than half of what she eats now.  She averages about 20 minutes to eat, but that is without any friendly distractions.    When she got back from her field trip she was very hungry and had eaten about half of her lunch.  Today at school they talked and made a note to their parents about going on the field trip.  Gwen's favorite part of the trip, and she mentioned it again and again and again, was the bus ride.  I seem to remember that it was the same thing for Trevor.  But I also know that she was telling everyone she could that she got to go to school in the morning.  She is looking forward to starting 1st grade, being a big kid, and all that it entails.  That's going to be a totally different ballgame!

For Trevor, we have been working on becoming more dependent on me for reminders and such.  I have been amazed at how much it has taken off my plate.  I think he thought that it meant I was going to leave him alone completely, but because of our weekly touchbase meetings, we can evaluate things that are happening and find new ways of doing things.  It has been a drastic shift for me to be much more hands-off, but I know that it means he has to figure out his own way of doing things.  While I know he can't grasp what it is going to be like in high school or even middle school at this point, I think it is a good idea to at least put some thoughts in his mind now, rather than have a whole shock to the system in a few years.  He is in the middle of some standardized tests which helps determine if he is accepted into the next gifted and talented program at his school.

He's also ramping up and getting into the swing of things for baseball.  We have found out that for our first really traveling tournament, we will be going to Rochester.  With hockey this year, we will also be traveling, probably out of town as well.  So here we go.  The weather could use some improving.  Poor kids have only been able to do some fielding in the school gyms until the ground is good enough to play on.  Yeah, the weather is a whole other issue.  Everyone has stopped selling winter gear, but both kids have changed shoe sizes and don't have good boots anymore.  With the snowing and melting, raining and such it sure has been wet on the snow gear!

As far as my life, I have been reflecting on that as well.  Having been volunteering as my main source of time commitment outside of family, that has been shifting too.  My two year stint as PTA treasurer is coming to an end in a little over two months.  We have a great replacement named, and since I'm not going anywhere, I know it will be an easy transition since I can be asked questions if something is in question.  But as of this September, I won't have a kid to look after an average of 5 days a week.  I'm goaling myself to find something part time, or get more involved in church/school volunteer opportunities.  It depends on what we need to do.  I for sure would love to get more time at hot yoga.  With the summer, I know I won't go as often as when the kids are at school, but it sure is nice when I get the chance to go.  So peaceful.

So there is time to think about the coming changes, but they sure are coming.  And coming fast.  Did I mention that Trevor and I can almost wear the same size shoes?  Yeah, he's growing up....in the blink of an eye.

Hot hot hot yoga

Not sure how many people have ever heard of hot yoga before.  I had through some people that I golf with. One of the people there is also an instructor.  I wasn't really sure if it was something I could do during the summer, but it sounded very intriguing during the winter.  I knew there were a lot of different places that did it, although there are a lot of places that don't only do hot yoga, just variations of yoga and do have hot yoga in the mix.  There have been groupons and other deals that have come into my email that I have checked out, but it looked like it was going to be something that was going to have to wait until Gwen was in school full time.  The times they usually have sessions were early morning, morning, lunchtime, or evening.  That 1-2 didn't seem like anyone was offering it.  So I kept it in the back of my mind, and didn't really pay any attention to it.

In having conversations with various people, it kept coming to my mind.  Another groupon thing came to my email that was very inexpensive, for an unlimited two month membership to an exclusive hot yoga place.  That's all they do.  Their room is 105 degrees and it only is about 15 minutes from my house.  I figured I would jump.  I knew that it wasn't going to be perfect, but with Gwen trading playdates every week with a girl from her class, I figured I would at least try it and then try to make it work when I could during the weekend, early mornings if I had to.  Now, after purchasing clothing, gathering the necessary equipment over the holidays from birthday and Christmas gifts, I was nervous, but ready to try it out.

I first went the day before my first workout to know where I was going and get registered.  Gwen came with me, and she was excited for me too.  I think if I let her into the room, she probably immediately would have not liked it as much, but she knew that I was really pumped, so I knew that was what she was reacting to.  Ever since that day, before I had even gone, she was telling everyone she saw that I was doing hot yoga.

So the time had come...I did my best to try to fit in, and also let the instructor know that I had no idea what I was doing.  I knew I was not flexible and completely out of shape because I had never, never, NEVER done anything in order to be in shape or be flexible.  At least in the summer, I can claim some muscle movement due to golf and walking the course.  The instructor assured me that I picked the right session to start with because it was a much slower paced class than some of their others.  Also, since it was in the morning, there were fewer people and more space to pick where you wanted to be compared to their afternoon and evening classes.

I got into the class and picked my spot and relaxed on the mat.  What a wonderful feeling...like being in a sauna.  This was Friday, before the cold snap, so I wasn't chilled, but even if I had, that would all be out the window as soon as I entered the room.  During the session, I was confused on many occasions, trying to make sure I heard and processed what we were supposed to be doing, and I was dripping sweat within a matter of minutes.  They had a midpoint break, and towards the end, I felt I had probably pushed myself hard enough and had to rest for a bit.  At the end...I felt so warm and relaxed and sooo....pumped on endorphins  probably.  It is a hard feeling to describe.  I'm guessing it is that feeling that marathoners or people who do races get when they are finished with their event.  I hear it a lot from people that have decided to take up running.  That the first time someone does a 5K, it is addictive and you want to do more. I can only guess that that feeling is what I felt.  I knew I could never do running, but I'm glad I found something that gives me that feeling.  It puts me in a better mood, and I feel so warm for many hours after the session.  I went back on Sunday morning, and while that was a very cold day, it didn't feel so bad to me.  But also when I went back on Sunday, I had a different instructor, fewer people in class and it was even slower and not as difficult for me to know what was being done and yet this time, I really felt it in my muscles.  Even today, two days later, I'm still sore.  In my neck, shoulders, and hamstrings.  It is cool to think that I could become more flexible and get this wonderful feeling maybe once or twice a week.  Maybe it will help my golf game.  I'm glad I took a chance and did it.

Getting geared up....

Not as though I had any time to gear up for anything....it was a weekend where I had two nights of something going on.  It was then followed by a Sunday of family time at the last home Twins game of the season.  Unfortunately, that left little time for anything else.  And we have a birthday in 3 days.  I have not yet even planned her friend party.  Thank goodness she hasn't even asked about it, because as I said previously, I think she would just prefer to have a bunch of her friends over for a playdate at her house.  We will see how it all works out after this week.

Friday night, I hosted our 3rd annual wine party hosted by Vicky and Richwood Winery.  Wow....do I have a wonderful group of mom friends.  And a wonderful excuse to get us all together for a very fun time!  It was great to see everyone again!

Saturday night, I invited myself to the Upper Midwest Regional Emmy awards.  Brian was nominated so I asked if I could come along as his "plus one".  Guys were in suits and ties, girls were in dresses.  They had it all ironed out so that the actual handing out of awards were done in groups of 5-6 at a time.  Not everyone was allowed their 15 second acceptance speech, so really it didn't take very long at all.  Unfortunately, their group didn't win as they were a city cable High School football broadcast up against FSN Twins, FSN Wild, and FSN Timberwolves.  Maybe one of these years they can pull out a win!  It was a fun time to be downtown all fancied up.  Funny thing, I ran into one of our golf pros at the course we play at up on the rooftop of Crave that night.

Then Sunday, it was Kid appreciation day at the Twins game and we called and found out that their autograph session was not worth being there early for and headed out to the game.  Russ won the tickets for a contest he entered at his work and he picked that day's game.  Unfortunately he had to fly out to San Francisco that evening so he couldn't stay until the end of the game.  Because it was a Sunday, they invite the kids to run the bases after the game, which the kids both wanted in on.  Sadly, the Twins lost but being able to be on the field was pretty cool, I thought.  Trevor jumped up on the wall in center field so I got a picture of that in mid-jump.  Running the bases was more of an experience than getting a picture was.  There weren't very many good places to take a picture but I got what I could.

This week its back-to-school with the little one's birthday on Wednesday.  She can bring treats for her class, we will have a special birthday dinner, dessert, and opening of presents before her family party next Sunday.  She is very excited, and actually after the kids conferences on Thursday, we plan on telling them about our spontaneous (at least from my perspective) trip to Disneyland in the middle of October for MEA break.  Then I'll have to get those last minute details finalized.

So on the list of things to do, I can check off:  first day of school, first PTA meeting, and fall fundraiser.  Unfortunately (only kind-of) I have to add many more things to the list including:  Disney plans which include lots of reservations and tickets needed to make the trip a success and finalizing costumes for both kids.  Because we are going during the time we are, we are also going to attend Mickey's Halloween Party.  It will be a trip to remember because we don't plan on doing it again!  It just worked out so nicely with Russ traveling to San Diego and the kids being out of school for 3 days before a weekend.  I love planning for Disney, I just hope I don't mess it up too bad!

It's Time to Play the Music

So I have no idea who reads this blog.  I do know that it is mostly my immediate family and that my intention for writing this is to give it as a gift to my kids when they are old enough to have their own kids.  Regardless, I don't know how many people understand my interest obsession with The Muppets.  So I will create a short backstory....  Yes as a child, I watched Sesame Street.  I really liked it.  Even when my younger brothers were watching it, I would also enjoy catching an episode or two.  But really I became a true muppet fan when my dad and I would watch the weekly show when it was in its first run.  I know as I was older, I could sometimes catch it on syndication but I will always remember The Muppet Show as an occasion where my dad and I saw it together.

When Jim Henson died while I was in Junior High, I was very sad.  I knew there would never be another Muppet Movie or Muppet Show like what he had put on in the past.  Granted I was a bit of a snotty teenager thinking about all this at the time, but oh well.  I would like to clarify that I am obsessed more with the Muppets associated with the Muppet Show and Muppet Movies, not necessarily Jim Henson, but I also knew of the association of what he brought to the whole creative side of things.

So I grew up, met my love, and brought along with my obsession.  I have all Muppet Movies, I had acquired a bunch of VHS tapes that I have let go....I think...and tried to continue to collect any DVDs that I don't have, that I think are worth seeing.  Like I said, since Jim Henson's death there haven't been a TON of movies that have measured up to the Jim Henson era.  We named our two cats Piggy and Kermie (both girls) that we got in 1998.  I have a tattoo of Kermit that I got in 2006.  I do have the first 3 Seasons (of 5) that they released via Disney.  Oh, that reminds me...how lucky is it that Disney now has acquired The Muppets?  It's now a permanent attraction at Disney World much to my LOVE!!!  Plus, Disney has got a great marketing strategy and plenty of funds to draw from!

I am extremely tempted to get the whole series via a non-disney supplier of the Muppet Show.  I do know that Disney decided to edit the shows individually and not include everything as originally shown.  It makes me sad, but I don't know that I'm the type of person to care a whole lot about one particular show, I just like being able to watch a show here or there and get into the big skits like Pigs in Space, Swedish Chef, and Muppet Labs.  I do wonder how much longer they are going to wait to release those last two seasons!  Maybe after their new movie?

Yes, I am very excited to see the new Muppet movie.  Like I said, its now a Disney property and they are promoting the heck out of it.  I already got a free movie pass when we do go.  But the reason I'm really writing is that although I had watched most of the Muppet Show series, I thought I should break it out in preparation for the movie.  I would like the kids to be at least knowledgeable about the music they will hear at the movie.

And so it begins.  I decided to start at the beginning even though I thought the beginning was a bit slow.  Fortunately, I hit the kids at a perfect time in their lives.  Because the show was less than a half hour, it keeps Gwen's attention and Trevor is ROLLING around laughing so hard about everything in the show that he often misses most of the next thing that happens because it is so fast moving.  It just gives me such a warm feeling to be able to share this feeling with them.  Thankfully, I think I have a good thing to throw on the TV when we are looking for a quick pick-me-up.

For those of you that are interested:  I'm pretty sure that Trevor's favorite part is anytime Stadler and Waldorf talk.  He knows they do or say something funny.  But the one he is currently quoting all the time is a skit that Fozzy did about the Wild West where he came in and held up the saloon with pickles.  You have to ask him about it if you really want to see something fun!

So 15 more days until the release!  It's time to play the music!  It's time to light the lights!  It's time to get things started!!!!!

Atlantic City and the Pseudo-Psisters

Eventually, we will have some pictures to post on facebook, but I think we are a ways off because of how crazy-busy life has become for the next month or so. And I'm not talking about me! I was lucky enough to get to go on a trip out to Atlantic City, NJ with three lovely ladies, two of which were classified as brides, a "moh" and a bridesmaid (me). The schedule was put on mostly by moh, and a quick snapshot is as follows:

We left on a flight Thursday evening flying direct to Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the plane was over an hour late because of a weight imbalance with the luggage. Uh...ok. Nice job with that one. We arrived and went out to rent the car to drive around an hour into Atlantic City. Although it was almost 2am by the time we checked into the hotel, it was a great view of the city all lit up. I'm not sure if anyone in our group had ever been to Vegas before, as I know I have not, so I'm guessing it is a similar sight to driving into Vegas with the lights everywhere.

We checked into our hotel and talked to a very nice check-in guy who helped us by telling us about some local facts. We were near the edge of the shady sort of town, but there were plenty of ways around. He explained that the bar at the hotel closed at midnight. There was a great diner less than a block away. A wonderful seafood restaurant across the street. How to quickly find our way to the boardwalk, and also a menu for a pizza place that delivered late.

So we all went up to our room and crashed for the night. How sweet is it that we got to sleep in until 10:30 before rolling out of bed? It is an extreme luxury for me! We slowly meandered over to the recommended diner and found that they served breakfast throughout the day as well as other foods for a very cheap price. After getting some food, we wanted to check out the boardwalk. We saw the beach, and although it had a funky odor, it was interesting that there were plenty of people swimming and lifeguards every block or so on the beach. There was also a lot of construction. Although the weather forecast was a bit scary coming into town, we didn't see rain during the day on Friday. It was pretty humid but in the mid-80s was pretty tolerable to me. Our first stop was at the House of Blues restaurant to grab a drink right on the boardwalk tables. We said our cheers and then decided to check out some of the casinos. We were happy to find $1 blackjack seats for everyone and the dealer and one other player were very kind to us. No one lost a ton of money, but no one was ahead a lot either, if I am remembering correctly.

I believe it was at the casino where we were told to check out the beach bar back where we started. So we did. It was very nice as how many places have a bar right on a beach complete with dancing? It was early enough in the afternoon so that it wasn't completely packed so we grabbed a table near the dance floor and before we left some people at the bar remarked that they picked up the front row of tables to make more room for later in the evening. They said they had a huge crowd at night. We left after a couple hours but it sure was nice to sit in the sun with drinks and hoppin' music!

We went back to the hotel to grab some drinks at the bar with an order at the pizza place. We all were ready to go out for the evening so we grabbed a taxi to the Tropicana Quarter which is the Tropicana as a casino attached to a little mall that included shops, a few nightclubs and a karaoke bar. That is where we spent the evening on our way out, in the cab, was the only time during our trip where there was rain. And it was HARD rain. I wonder how the beach bar did that night?

We got back early the next morning and slept late again. Some of us headed out around noon to get breakfast from the cheapo diner and then moh and I headed out to the boardwalk for more casinoing. I stink again. We did the $1 blackjack and I won some of my money back after being down $40 but I still enjoyed being there.

We met the rest of our crew after we walked around a bit and sat at the other beach bar. For a late lunch, we ate at the Hard Rock Cafe, and then for the evening we hung out at the casino. Pink bride won over $170 in slots that evening! The rest of us didn't get our money back. So for our closing number, we went to the delicious seafood restaurant across the street from the hotel. Yum Yum.

Unfortunately, we had to wake up at 3am to catch our flight back to Minnesota. We had to get back to Philly and arrived in Minnesota shortly after 8am. I had a nap and just kept on going. Russ had to leave that evening for his trip to Tennessee.

Overall, it was a spectacular trip. Except for the flight delay on the way out, it was wonderful! And us pseudo-psisters are going to have to plan next years trip, perhaps to Chicago? Not likely that we will get to go out on free airfare again. Thanks to everyone for making it such a wonderful event!

What's going on

Again, this title has dual meaning. There have been a lot of activities going on within the last few days, but at the same time, I'm asking myself "What is going ON?!?!?" particularly with Gwen.

Last Sunday we were able to participate in a fundraiser at the Waterpark of America. The kids and I, Kyrsten and Tracy all went toward the end of summer. It was much more busy this time, but for the price it was very tough to pass up. Trevor enjoyed playing on the jungle-gym type area, even though it was for younger kids. Gwen played on it too, but she had to have someone nearby to help shield her from the gigantic barrel of water that occasionally dropped down on top of everyone. Primarily she just went up and down the slide that was more her size. Trevor did get to go down the big slides with dad on two occasions, but soon enough it was time to go. Trevor was quick to say that the water park plus his goal at the parents vs. kids game for hockey made it the best day ever! He just has the rest of the week before hockey is done for the season, which to him also signals the end of winter. YIPEE!!!

Now, the kids are done with swimming lessons, so that is something gone for the time being, but piano lessons keep coming. Trevor now knows a significant portion of reading music. I'm curious to know if he translates it to his music class at school, but regardless, his teacher remarked at how well he knew his songs for the lesson both playing and in rhythm. What I find very interesting is that Trevor's ability to memorize things is becoming more apparent. It does take him a day or two to learn new pieces but he gets to the end of the practice week and he has the pieces memorized. I don't know that he tries, but he just does. Oh...and one other noteworthy event for Trevor, he has graduated from addition time tests to subtraction time tests. He is 5 answers short of starting his finishing subtraction, and then I don't know what will happen. He knows about multiplication, but I'm not sure if we are going to have to have him memorize those facts as well? I guess we'll see what happens.

Now Gwen....my oh my. She returned to the childcare school yesterday, and seemed to have a good time. She had a special day at preschool on Tuesday where Russ got to be in her class for the last hour. They both enjoyed that, I was told. When I took her to dance class last night, I had been very clear to her that she needed to do a good job listening to the teacher. Well, right away she decided not to listen and one of her classmates accidentally stepped on her finger. Ouch! I gave her hugs and kisses and she did get back into class, but after a few minutes she wanted to come out again. And again. After the third time I had to take her home. Not peacefully, I can assure you. I'm hoping that it just started off bad and she couldn't recover, but I guess last week was Trevor's week to be a bit "off" in my opinion and this week it is Gwen's. She is starting her teenage attitude of mouthing off to me and loving the attention it gets her when I talk to her. Oh the joys of raising such a daughter.

On a positive note, I took out the old playdough that I won during our sibling division of toys a while back, and when I showed her that I could turn playdough into sesame street characters, she was in heaven. DOLLS!!! Unfortunately, we didn't have a wide selection of playdough so last night more colors were bought along with a strawberry shortcake mold, similar to the sesame street characters. I'm guessing that is what we will be playing for a good portion of the coming days. Hopefully, she will also get some more sleep during naptimes so that she can feel better than she does.

And when it comes to me, the time seems to be flying by. I have a final paper for my final class due on Tuesday. I have completed one business tax return, and have been asked to complete another. I love how much I have learned in the past 8 months and now this year's taxes have expanded my knowledge! To add to my resume, there could be the potential of helping out in a non-profit setting. I'll let you all know more about that if it works out ;-) So yeah, that's what's going on.

You would think this week would be bad....

But it was really good. Really, really good. I know I'm going to forget like half of the stuff that went on this week, so I may have to come back and rewrite a few things. We'll have to see how that goes.

Going all the way back to Monday. It seems like forever ago. It was Trevor's first baseball game. It was raining and cold and windy. Not exactly good weather for watching baseball. It reminded me of 13 years ago, watching Russ pitch in the pouring rain. This time, I at least remembered an umbrella, and thankfully I didn't bring Gwen with me, or else we would have had to sit in the car. Gwen was able to stay at home with Grandma and Amy. She was perfectly happy doing so.

Tuesday, instead of going to golf, there were two meetings I was attending at school. One was on a new multi-age class set up for next year that will have half 1st graders, and half 2nd graders. My brothers participated in these types of classes growing up, but I didn't get the chance. Before going to the meeting on the subject, I was actually turned off to the idea. The more I thought about it, and listened to the arguments, the more I thought it might be a good fit for Trevor. After discussing it with Russ, and Trevor's current teacher, the more it made sense. So right now, we have tossed his name into the ring. We will have to see if it works out, but for now, it may.

Wednesday, we decided to go out and bring Trevor to the science museum while Gwen hung out with my mom. My dad, my brothers and I all would go to the science museum at least once a year, sometimes more depending on what the exhibits were. The last time we were at the Children's Museum, it was obvious that Trevor was getting a little too old for it. We had also been at the Science Museum when the Star Wars exhibit had been there. At the time, it was a little too old for him, but there was still a lot to do. So this time, my dad came with us, and decided to go on all the attractions. We did the omnitheater, and saw the exhibit which was the "Dead Sea Scrolls". We got there almost at 2:00 which turned out to be great because while there could have been schools there, they had left at that time to get back to school. So Trevor had his run of the place. The places that excited him the most were the human body, specifically the girl that when you opened a door of her face, she "sneezed" and blew out water. But there was also a lot of time at the microscope looking at different things like muscles, bones, and other small objects. He also loved the weather part, where they created a smoke tornado that you could break up. I think it might have helped him feel a little bit better about tornadoes, seeing as how we always seem to talk about how dangerous and destructive they can be. He also made it through the omnitheater performance of "Arabia". Yeah, not my choice of fun for a young kid, and there wasn't enough cool feeling when they did the scenery to keep him interested. But to his credit, he made it through without much complaining. Then on to the Dead Sea Scrolls. I think what saved this was that they had a cell phone-like automated tour guide that you entered numbers on a sign that talked about what you did. They had a "family" guide and an "adult" guide. I decided to go on the family guide to keep up with Trevor. We simply played the who can find the next number first. I think the historical significance was lost on me. Again, I was glad that Trevor survived through it without much complaining. The other thing that Trevor enjoyed doing while we were there was that right at the entrance to the exhibits, they had a "newscaster" place where someone could sit in front of a teleprompter and try to become a newscaster. Can you imagine how much time Trevor wanted to do this? If you know him, he was right at home doing this. So overall, I think it was perfectly age appropriate, and it still gave him exposure to things that he may not understand or appreciate, but at least I didn't think he would outgrow it anytime soon.

Thursday, Kyrsten came over to watch the kids for me while I did some accountant stuff. You should see how much Gwen enjoys having girls over to play. Especially ones that are willing to pay her a lot of attention. Russ also came home around dinner time so the kids had some time with him as well. Today, I did Trevor's Friday stations at school, for the last time. Russ will be doing it next Friday, but after that, Trevor will be done with them! He only has 4 weeks left of school as a Kindergartner. I asked him today how he felt about that, and he said he was a little excited, but also a little sad. I am happy to say that he seems to be heading down ending it on a good note. We haven't had nearly as many issues recently as in the past, and I think he just needed more direction to help him figure out how to better behave.

While the weather here this week, until today, has been rainy and cold, we have had so much going on, it has been not even on my mind. Also, I have been asked to look at a start-up company's accounting records which has REALLY pumped me up. It is so clear, by how much I enjoy doing this sort of thing, that it really is the right career for me to get in to.

So that's all I can remember for now. Whew! Hopefully I don't have much more to report for now. Bring on the hot weather!!!!

What a great week

I had an exceptionally amazing week that really left me feeling so complete and connected, hopefully I can carry that feeling on for a long time. Tuesday night was my lady's golf league opening dinner. No golf, but still able to see all my friends from golf. We start golfing tomorrow! And going to have wonderful weather as well! Wednesday evening, my group of mom friends decided to start trying to get together once a month just to sit and chat...without kids. We were never interrupted because of crying or fighting. It was so nice! Friday night, Trevor was at a sleepover, so Russ and I got to spend some quality time with just Gwen. I've been trying to give her a little bit extra attention lately because she seems like she is going through something. Maybe teething, maybe development, but whatever it is, I know I need to soak it up while I can. Saturday evening, Russ and I got to go out for a date night. We ate dinner, on a short wait at Olive Garden. I really like their food, and although it can get a little pricey with 4 people, I actually was hoping their wait time was longer because I didn't have kids! After dinner, we went to the nearby bowling alley, but when they were on a wait, I decided to do the billiards table. I still stink at billiards, but it was a lot of fun. The on Sunday, I took part in a little family golf at the golf course I grew up with. My golf game was ON...for some reason, and I shot my best round ever. Since it took place after April 15th, we were required to post it. There goes my handicap. Which I'm really happy about actually. A lot of people want to keep their handicap up so they can play really well in a tournament and do well. I want to be able to say that I'm dropping my handicap because I'm playing better than I have before.

So bring on this week! Bring on SUMMER darn it all! It has just got to be warmer than last year. Lots of fun is going to be had!

(And for the record, my new best is a 93. I had gotten under 100 prior, but not this far under.)

The game of Monopoly

We have a few things going for us with this game. Trevor likes to play games....what kid doesn't?.....and has seen mom play some games on pogo's site including Monopoly. We have the game for Wii as well. In addition to a Twin Cities version of the game (in "real life") we also have the Nintendo version. This is Trevor's favorite. And now that I've given him two dice to play the game with, he is doing really well understanding the game. I'm not playing with him yet, because a big part of playing the game is his imagination to come up with how to play the game. But slowly I've been teaching him how the game works. I LOVE how fast he is becoming familiar with the addition of the two dice. He started out having to count everything out, but now, he recognizes a good portion of the rolls and knows what the sum is almost immediately. So if anyone needs a fun thing for kids to learn their addition, I do recommend playing a game with two dice.

Most recently, he has been using the property cards, which in this case are characters from the most popular Nintendo games. He matches the cards up to where they are on the board, and is starting to talk about buying them. Hopefully soon we'll be actually able to play the game. I did look on the box, and it is recommended for ages 8 and up. I thought it was 10, but we still have some time.

Of course Gwen would love to be playing whatever we are playing, but she is ok with coloring and coloring and coloring. I've finally gotten out her new 16 color box of crayons, and upgrade from her 8 box that was pretty worn down. She was in heaven. All the new colors, including PINK that she never had before, and how new the crayons are.....she loves to color. Maybe she'll have a career in the arts.

Trevor got a little cold this week, but it was gone pretty quick. Now Gwen has it, and she isn't really having a good time with it. She is much more irritable. But I guess it is our turn. We haven't been sick much at all this year. She should be better soon. Right now, she was up this morning, but asked me to shut the door and seems to have gone back down for another rest.

As a side note, I shot my best round of the year at league on Tuesday. A 46 with 4 pars, two of which should have been birdies. Too bad I couldn't post that on Sunday, maybe we could have earned more money than we did.

So this week is the last week of summer. So far we just have a trip to the fair this week, and then heading to the cabin for the weekend. Tonight is Trevor's Twins game with me. It's our first date night.

Woo Hoo, we got a trophy

Well this weekend was the Couples championship at our golf course. The first year we played in it, we won. Last year we came in 3rd or 4th place. And this year we won again. Unfortunately, I wasn't the one that carried the team. I haven't been playing well this year at all. Except for a random day here or there. Oh well.

So we got our trophy for our win and were able to show Trevor, which I think was something that he was happy about. But he was pretty confused by how if we both won, how we both didn't each win a trophy.

Thanks to Grandma, Tracy, Derek, Teresa, Amy, Kyrsten, Jason, and the pets for helping with the kids while we were at the event. It was a beautiful day to be out golfing as well which also made for a great time. Now we have our relaxing week to get back into the swing of things....And we get a few more days of summer.

I went on an adventure!

For my family members....and to Brian....I hope I don't ruin your own blog by posting this. Disclaimer that I was only a spectator to this whole contest and I hope he gives you a real insider view.

So Tuesday was the premiere night for Brian's (and crew) 48 hour film project. It was a perfect movie-watching night because it was rainy and dreary. Brian and I had planned on meeting at a nearby restaurant/bar for dinner beforehand, but the weather was so bad and causing such traffic issues that I left an hour and a half before showtime and while sitting in traffic I was very concerned that I wouldn't make it in time.

Also, while I was sitting in traffic, the car started to overheat. The warning light came on and it hit the highest temperature that it would read. So I was scared to even pull over and stop because I didn't know if the car would start again. Remembering back to my driver's training days, I knew that if I wanted to help the temperature, I should turn on the heat. So I cracked the windows (think rain pouring down now) and blasted the heat. Thank goodness it did work, however now I was dripping sweat. I guess I got my wish that I wanted to be hot hot hot!

I survived that ordeal to make it to meet Brian to get my ticket before entering the premiere. I met some of the fellow project people and then we went in to get some snacks and our seats. This showing was 13 of the 92 (I believe) Minneapolis projects. We were handed a voting ballot so that we could vote on our top 3 favorites. We then could also see the different genre's of movies that everyone submitted. Brian's film was horror and they were up first. For those that don't know...their project was to complete a 4-7 minute film in 48 hours. They drew genre's out of a hat, and had to have 3 elements in their film. 1) A character named Kevin or Kathleen Schnable, 2) a sandwich (as a prop), and 3) a line of dialogue being, "I hope they decide soon". It was interesting to see all the ways that these groups incorporated the elements into their films.

I, of course, was also paying close attention to the sound in all of the films. Brian did a stellar job on his own project, and I was amazed at the quality of the others. They ranged from crazy-feedback-type-sound to Hollywood movie quality.

So the different genre's were very long stretching....Brian's group was horror. They used a great location to give it that "scary" feel. The next was Drama....I have to say....high school students could have done a better job writing the script. Woman enters restaurant, breaks up with fiancee, and leaves with the guy she cheated on her fiancee with. One of my favorites was the romance genre....it was about a couple that meets and then finds out that they are cousins and wonders if they should continue "dating" or what have you. It was funny and well timed. Another one that was silly....unintentionally...or maybe not was the foreign film. They used German as the foreign language, but only used a first level amount of German. "Ja" was used a lot. And last, I have to mention that there was a "Ghost" genre that everyone was talking about. It was a BAD movie for me to see because it involved a young boy, his younger sister and a gun. I'll stop there. Of course you could argue this had to be a "good" movie if it made me disturbed, because that was its intention. But really? For me? I was very close to walking out of the theater, because I could predict what it was doing and was not happy about it.

Anyway, the shows concluded, we voted and met up with the crew again to meet at the after party. Turns out, no one notified the cafe that there was to be an after party, so when everyone got there, no one could get in. There were a few workers cleaning up, but no one to answer the people outside looking in.

So instead we headed back to my neck of the woods to have a little dinner and chat. It was just Brian and I, so we had a nice chat....something I haven't really done much of since turning into an adult as I have realized since Kevin's wedding planning days. It was interesting to hear about everything that went into the planning and execution of the movie and what would be next for them.

So overall....a new experience and a bit of an adventure for me. Congratulations to Brian....it was super cool to see your name on the big screen! I hope this is the first of many and maybe next time even an award or two to go along with it!

Mother's Day

I treated myself to a pedicure on Saturday since the salon wasn't open on Sundays. Then on Sunday I got to sleep in, we went to Target, and I ate at my favorite place for dinner. It was a very nice day for me.

Unfortunately, the kids are in the middle of battling little colds. I say little because they do not even compare to what they usually get during the winter months. However, getting colds do contribute to a change in attitude. I know that Gwen doesn't sleep as well, and gets tired during the day.

But Trevor, in addition to a little cold is really getting into his pre-K development. I'm thinking the little cold adds to it...or at least that is what I'm hoping. The biggest change that I see is that he simply does not care about discipline tactics. Or even rewards for good behavior. I am very aware that this is something that I cannot control. No matter how much I want to. It is his choice in what he decides to obey and not. But WOW is it frustrating at this point. Because you know he knows better, and you would think that based on what kind of a person he is, he would choose the "good" path. And then I realize that he is 5 years old, not 18 and that he's still testing his limits, and learning what it's like to be a kid.

So in the mean time, we're still being as consistent as we can to show him that we aren't going to waver on his not-so-nice behaviors. And, as Trevor goes to Kindergarten, it'll be Gwen's turn to go through a major development. Such is life with a few kids.

Very strange weekend

I guess I could tell it was going to be different from the fact that I was a single parent for the weekend. Add to it the time change. And on top of that, we had Trevor's basketball practice/game and then Trevor sang at his preschool's church on Saturday night. Then on Sunday, I was able to attend a bridal shower.

Then on Friday I got an email from one of my mom friends that said she was free for the weekend, and would anyone be able to go to dinner and/or a movie on Saturday night. Since my mom was already coming over to watch Gwen during Trevor's singing, I thought she might be ok with watching the kids for the rest of the night.

I had not seen a movie in the theater since 2006. I think I hadn't been able to attend a bridal shower since 2006 either. (I have been invited to a few since then, but not able to attend). So I got more up to date on both of those things.

Then the time change happened on Saturday night and Sunday morning, everything was just off. The kids had been waking up at 6:00 or 6:30 for almost the whole week prior, so I thought the time change would just correct the time that they got up. Well, Trevor didn't wake up until 8:15, and I had to wake Gwen up at 8:45 to get ready to go to church. While I went to the bridal shower, the kids were being watched by Grandma, Kyrsten, Derek, Jason, and Tracy. Gwen's sleeping was so off she didn't want to take a nap all day. It didn't surprise me. But at 6:30 when we had dinner, she fell asleep after eating, and could have slept through the night. But we woke her up to give her a bath and change her into her PJs. And again this morning, I had to wake her up. Hopefully we can get a nap out of her today so we can slowly adjust to a decent schedule.

Part of her schedule being out of whack could e the fact that she really has been secretly learning her letters and numbers. We were out to dinner at TGI Friday's on Friday and I was shocked that she could identify the letters S, W, O, L, A by me asking which letters they were. I knew she could identify letters like O and M, but I'm pretty sure she knows all of them. THANK YOU word whammer. And yes, she can count to 10, backwards and forwards. I think she learned to count it backwards first because Trevor loves to count down trying to get Gwen to stop doing something. And she always loved hearing the countdown chant.

So we really had a crazy weekend. This weekend, we go to the cabin. Trevor is really looking forward to it, as it's been on his calendar since we got it for Christmas.

Stop the stopwatch

Took me less than 7 days to complete. I think it was something like 500 + 600 + 650 + 750 pages read. So quick math....2500 pages? Yikes....it was a good series....glad I did it to say that I did it, but honestly not as good as I was expecting. Now I have to watch the movie...whenever I can netflix it.

Be back tomorrow with an update as to how things are going. Trevor has his kindergarten registration tonight, so I'll be sure to recap that night.

Yep, they are addictive

So Thursday night I started the Twilight series. Since then I've finished the first two books out of four. It is a nice escape during this season of cold and trapped being indoors. I was hoping to put it off until our Disney trip so I had something to read during the naptimes, but I couldn't hold out.

So I'm heavily engrossed in book #3. I don't have much left to really organize or plan for our trip, which is nice. Trevor is on day 3 of a cold that he'll be over by Disney but I hope he doesn't get anything else. Hopefully if Gwen gets it, she gets it soon.

If anything else noteworthy happens, I'll be sure to update. Otherwise, DISNEY HERE WE COME!!!

Big plans for the adults!

We didn't have plans for the weekend other than on Friday. Occasionally, the moms and dads of Trevor's friends get together for different gatherings. Most of the time (as was the case this Friday) it is for some kind of card game. Seeing as how we have a nice open space for people to gather, and it isn't exactly nice enough to play outside we decided to host the card night at our house.

It was fun for Trevor because he was able to go over and stay at Bubba's house. As was the case recently, he didn't quite sleep through the night but he did sleep a little better than last time. We did keep Gwen with us as while we are not expecting her to sleep well at Disney, at least at first, I don't think it is fair for them to have to deal with two kids that don't sleep well at night.

Have you ever heard of the difference between an introvert and an extrovert? I don't remember who told me this, but it has always stuck in my mind as true for me. An introvert gets tired out by parties, and an extrovert gets energized by them. So while I enjoy the planning part of the party, it gets me so stressed out to even think about having to put it all together and hope that everyone enjoys themselves.

But we made it. Gwen was able to stay up and play with us for a little bit. I was curious to see how she would act with everyone. And at first she wasn't sure what was going on, but she eventually just pretended like she was the only one in the room.

The party itself was great timing as the week had been horribly cold and I think it was nice to have an excuse to get together. It is also always fun to be able to play and talk with everyone. And seeing as how Trevor wasn't there to steal the spotlight, we really could talk. After that night, I was exhausted for the rest of the weekend, but it was so worth it! Thanks to everyone for a great time!

Ahhh...the good old days

There is two ways this has been happening recently. Facebook has been being a big "good old days" reminiscing outlet recently. First by talking with and "seeing" friends I went to school with and work with. Then pictures started to come out. Not even necessarily of me, but of my friends from way back when.

Then last Friday, I was able to get together with a friend I have known since I was 5 years old. She was able to come over before our dinner reservations to say hi to the kids. Immediately, Trevor became his tour-guide self. I get that he thinks that whenever family comes over, he thinks they are coming over to see him, but even when I told him about "my" friend, he didn't act any different as if it would have been one of his friends. He asked her to play Lego Star Wars, go up and play in his room, eat dinner with us.... Gwen took to her right away too. She is a girl after all. Our dinner was wonderful. We went to my favorite restaurant, and the conversation was great. But again, it took me back.....high school, Jr. High, elementary school....ahhhhh

This past weekend, I found an old scrapbook that I had made of all my younger elementary school years events. T-ball, dance class, and even a few rolls of film that I took with my camera of my friends, family, and trips we took. I found a 5th grade picture where we were visiting the state capitol. I tried to name all the kids without the help of a yearbook. I did pretty well! And the rest of the kids, other people helped me name. Blast from the past I tell you!

Finally, Trevor headed back to school yesterday. Granted I can't exactly call the days way back last year, "the good old days" but it sure felt like it had been forever since he was in school. The strange thing was that both kids slept in pretty late. Which was something they hadn't done all break. I had to wake Gwen up a little before 8:30 just so I could be sure she was going to be dressed before we had to go.

Of course this morning, they were both up at 7:30 or earlier.... But back to the routine we are. Still working on a schedule for Disney. It is going to be here quick!

Time is flying!

And yet some times seem to crawl by....oh well. The kids both have a cold, and hopefully it will be done with quickly. Couple updates for what has been going on with us.....

Thursday night I had the annual mom's swap of cookies and subsequent gathering. We always say we wish we had more of an excuse to get together more often than once a year, but still....I'll take the fun whenever I can get it. I remember last year I had to leave pretty early because I had to come back and help put the kids to bed. But this year I was able to hold out until the end. 10:30 baby!!!! I even partook of the White Elephant game. Because of it I got a fun blue scarf for Gwen to play dress-up with. And she loves it....it is so soft and fluffy!

Then on Friday, Russ and I were out for his company's Christmas party. Again childless, I felt like I didn't know what to do with myself! Granted by this time I was exhausted because both kids had been up due to their colds. It was nice to see some of the family again without kids. Even if we go somewhere with the kids to visit, I can't stop myself from wondering, if it happens to be too quiet where or what the kids are getting into.

The food was great, the company was better and a fun thing to do once a year.

Saturday was low key....hopefully the kids were able to rest up and we stayed inside all day because it was very cold. Sunday, we ran some errands, and got ready for dinner. It was a dinner celebration for "Grandma" at Benihanas. We haven't been there since last year and this time we went to the new one open in Maple Grove. I am very thankful for the distraction of both the scenery and the many people that were in attendance. Both kids enjoy the attention, but right away Trevor was asking about the chef and when he was going to come out. (If you aren't familiar with Benihana's - they are a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant that also serves sushi.)

So we ordered our drinks, got our soup, followed by the salads before the chef came out. He started to do his thing, and Gwen looked a little frightened. But as soon as people started laughing and clapping she settled down. Trevor was really excited. It was interesting trying to watch Trevor who was very hungry, you could tell. And he REALLY wanted to use the chopsticks. So he asked for them to put a rubber band on the end so he could use them that way. He ate some vegetables and then the shrimp he was given. Now, he has always liked fish, occasionally liked crab meat, but I've never gotten him to try shrimp. I'm guessing it had something to do with the way the chef prepared it in front of him. But he ate all of it and asked for more. Thankfully everyone was offering him their appetizer shrimp to him and I had ordered shrimp for him as part of his dinner. The other interesting tidbit...he was determined to eat "octopus" for dinner. Derek ordered it and said he could have some if he wanted...so he tried it and of course had a few more pieces. I think everyone thought that it was going to be more squid shaped, but it came out in square patties. So I guess we have a few options for future foods.

So not only did Trevor have a good time, but he played "Benihana" for a good portion of the morning today. That kid is so funny. And we begin our Christmas celebration in two days. Merry Christmas all!

Making cookies

Yeah, you would think that would be simple. I can follow a recipe. Thank goodness for the allrecipies.com site where if I have an idea I can look up what I need. I even tested out a trial batch with the family a week or so ago.

I am baking cookies for the 3rd Annual Swappalooza put on with a group of mom friends. Granted I waited until the last minute for this. Someday I'll remember that it is BAD to procrastinate.

I am making a to-do list a lot. It updates, changes, things get crossed off, things get added, I just don't want to forget or get too far behind on things. And for the party (which is in two more days) I need to bake cookies, make a appetizer, and get a white elephant gift. At least one has been taken care of. But I thought tonight I could take care of the baking cookies part. I had went to the grocery store once already this week but with Trevor's preschool program, I didn't get a good shopping session in because I had to hurry back for his program. I also probably should have taken a good inventory of things I might need before I went back a second time to the grocery store.

So this evening started as I was going to the grocery store to get a few more things I needed for the party. Then I started to make the cookies. I had to double the recipe and put it into a larger bowl than I usually did. And MAN did I make a mess! Cocoa and flour on the floor, eggs, butter, and sugar on the counter, a random assortment of cookie batter on my shirt and pants....and it was HARD to stir the batter at the end. I should have built up my muscles or something.

I took a break to put the kids up to bed. Came back down to actually bake the cookies. Actually I'm in the middle of it right now. I almost ran out of white sugar (one of the things I didn't get onto my list) and am about to run out of Pam cooking spray. I know there are other ways to grease cookie sheets, but my goodness. Bad planning by me.

Then I needed to make some room for the cookies to cool and be taken off of the cookie sheets. So I put away all the ingredients. Including the extra brown sugar and flour I bought but didn't end up needing. Good job again Krissy. And as I was putting all the stuff up on the shelf and smooshing it rather than nicely organizing it, stuff began to fall off of the shelves. Ooo look....plastic bottle of sesame oil. No problem. Back on the shelf. Balsamic vinegar...glass bottle...ok. No problem. Didn't break....back on the shelf. SHOVE....Oops. There they go again....this time the top broke off of the balsamic vinegar and dripped onto the counter, onto the floor and somehow onto the back part of my jeans at the knee. SWEET.

So now, not only am I crossing off the "getting the cookies done" but I'm adding, "clean the kitchen, soak clothes, buy replacement vinegar, cooking spray, and sugar". The party is going to be just what I need......*SIGH*
